& MY RIB IS BROKE! BROKE! BROKE! BROKE! BROKE!

In the Fall of 2011, I was a year away from parenthood. I'm unsure if that makes these recollections more or less trustworthy. I vividly recall seeing abusive police officers shove my pregnant friend during Occupy Wall Street, a chilling omen. I remember my small, elegant Brooklyn home office and furiously downloading MP3's; creating narratives from the pieces. I was exacting in the curation of this cassette mixtape, perfectly adorned by my then partner, because I sold them at various Brooklyn holiday markets, as was the style at the time.

Thankfully, one found its way to Rudy Jude founder Julie O'Rourke. It is my understanding this tape was played endlessly in her white pick-up truck, but lost to time when it was sold. Yet, cassettes are ephemeral by nature. To my great joy, she asked me to make playlists for her new, exquisite Venice shop. She knew by then that my informal, lifelong career goal is to be a "Shoe Store DJ." It seems others have appreciated them too. I will never forget the day I was having breakfast with friends at my favorite restaurant, LB Kitchen, when the Summer 2024 playlist came on!
